Coastal Geology

CPE Geology and Geomatics Department professionals are internationally recognized for their expertise in marine sand searches for beach nourishment. CPE geologists have perfected the application of CHIRP high resolution seismic-reflection and sidescan sonar to provide enhanced definition in shallow deposits where cost effective sand mining is possible. Onboard use of GIS to make field decisions maximizes the efficiency of the team and the area that can be covered. Aerial lidar surveys also provide IHO Order 1 accuracy standards for position and depth and can be effective for seafloor mapping in water depths up to 75 meters.

CPE geologists combine geomorphology mapping with geotechnical measurements to locate and define large sand deposits accurately and effectively. In 23 years, CPE geologists have identified billions of cubic yards of sand resources on the Continental Shelf in state and federal waters, including finding sand in areas where no sand was believed to exist. Of that volume, hundreds of millions of cubic yards of beach quality sand have been either placed on beaches or reserved for use in future beach nourishment projects.
