Biological ServicesArtificial Reefs and Habitat RestorationCPE biologists, geologists and engineers work together to design, permit, supervise construction and monitor performance and colonization of more than 10 artificial reef installations. Constructed as mitigation or habitat enhancement, these installations provide significant opportunities as replacement or supplemental habitat for marine floral and faunal species including numerous protected and managed species of importance. Rigorous monitoring provides data on which the regulatory agencies base their permitting decisions. CPE biologists strive to present this data at scientific forums and in peer-reviewed journals in order to disseminate important biological data that can be used by coastal managers. In addition to mitigation reefs, CPE's team of engineers and biologists design and implement habitat restoration projects that include reconstruction and restoration of coral reefs, construction of artificial reefs, seagrass transplantation, mangrove habitat creation, and enhancement of beach and dune habitat for endangered and threatened coastal species. Our biologists have been trained by professionals from NOAA on coral restoration and transplantation techniques used by the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, and have conducted several coral repair and transplantation projects.
