Coastal Planning & Engineering, Inc. (CPE) conducted offshore geotechnical investigations for the Town of Palm Beach Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday (15 - 17 February). Mobilization and setup for the field investigations started on Tuesday, 15 February. Wednesday’s field activities concentrated on the deposition (trap) basin and ebb-tidal shoal north of Lake Worth Inlet. Thursday’s the investigations covered the area offshore from the southern part of the Town of Palm Beach (Phipps Park). Nineteen (19) vibracores were obtained (9 at the Lake Worth Inlet study area and 10 from the southern Town of Palm Beach study area). Visual field interpretation and analysis indicated that: (1) vibracores obtained at the Lake Worth Inlet were fairly homogeneous in composition and vertical sequence (stratigraphy), but varied spatially with coarser-grained sediments occurring near the inlet and finer-grained sediments occurring updrift (north of the inlet). Vibracores obtained from the southern Palm Beach study area varied stratigraphically and in composition. Generally, nearshore cores obtained on top of diabathic (cross-shore) sediment ridges contained coarser sediments with trace to no coral fragments. Sediments farther offshore (located closer to coral reefs) contained finer-grained sediments with some coral fragments. Detailed vibracore descriptions and geological - sedimentological analyses are currently being conducted at the CPE office in Boca Raton.
