The first phase of the field investigation was initiated over the "long New Year’s Day weekend" and completed by 10 January 2005. In general, at least one or two vibracores were obtained within the 1998 borrow areas. In addition, secondary vibracores were used to ascertain the “sphere of influence” (vertical and lateral extent of sandy strata with desirable properties) of primary vibracores that showed good quality sand. Preliminary results are summarized below by core, along with a description of the work completed to date.

Preliminary results obtained so far indicate that CPE Borrow Areas I and IX contain beach sand that is compatible with project guidelines. Sand along the landward margin of western Borrow Areas VI and VIII appears to be satisfactory. Cores in the Navigation Channel, COE Borrow Areas 5C and 6, sampled high quality sand deposits that should enhance the emergency fill requirement. These preliminary results require laboratory analysis, borrow area engineering & design, and TDC concurrence before final suitability can be determined.

The second phase of the field investigation began on 18 January 2005 and was completed by 27 January 2005. In general, at least one to five vibracore were obtained within the areas that were identified during Phase I. Preliminary results are summarized below by core, along with a description of work completed to date. U.S. Army Corps of Engineer (COE) borrow area designators use Arabic numerals (1, 2, 3, etc.) whereas CPE borrow areas are identified by Roman numerals (I, II, III, etc.).

Bay County Preliminary Vibracore Summary (Daily Log)

30 December 2004
The CPE coastal geology team left at 9:30am EST from the Boca Raton office and arrived in Panama City Beach at 8:00pm CST.

31 December 2004
The CPE coastal geology team collected sand samples from Bay County DNR monuments T-5 to R-60. According to protocols, surface samples were collected along the mean tide line, on the mid-berm slope, and at the berm crest. Additionally, a sample was obtained at a 3-ft depth below the mid-berm surface.

1 January 2005
The CPE coastal geology team collected sand samples from Bay County DNR monuments R-70 to R-90.5. The tug and barge docked at City Marina dock, Panama City, during the night. The drilling barge departed the dock at 6:30am. Due to sea conditions (waves were 3 to 5 ft high), no coring was conducted on the offshore borrow areas. A core was collected within St Andrews Pass, but during recovery, a leg on the coring unit was twisted and damaged. This twisting was caused by the strong in coming tide. The barge returned to the dock to repair the coring frame.

Due to the sea conditions (waves were 4 to 6 ft high), no coring was conducted on the offshore borrow areas. Three cores were collected in St Andrews Pass and one core was taken just outside the jetties. Due to sea conditions (wave 3-5 ft high; winds: 15-20 kts) one core was taken outside the jetties but no more cores were attempted outside the jetties.

23 January 2005
The tug and barge docked at City Marina dock, Panama City, during the night. Due to the sea conditions (waves 5 to 6 ft high; winds: 20-25 kts) coring operations were canceled for the day.
