On August 6, 2003, Coastal Planning & Engineering Geotechnical
and Geology Section began vibracoring operations onboard the Atlantic
Twin, a 90 foot Catamaran
operated by Alpine Ocean Seismic Survey. From August 6th to 10th thirty three
cores were taken and field logged onboard the Atlantic Twin. Twenty eight of
these cores were taken on a 3 to 5 foot ridge approximately 5 miles off of Naples
Florida and five were obtained from a potential deposit approximately 5 miles
off of Marco Island, Florida.
Between
August 11th to 13th five reconnaissance cores and twelve primary
cores were taken and field
logged onboard
the Atlantic Twin
on a 8 to 20 foot ridge known as Toms Hills, these ridges are
located approximately 12 miles offshore of Sanibel Island and 30
Miles northwest of North Collier County Florida.
On August 7, 2003, the first eight cores were taken to CPE's Boca
Raton office and were photograph, logged and sampled. The remaining
forty-two cores were transported to Boca Raton every two days to
be logged, sampled and analyzed. By August 18th thirty five cores
were logged, photographed and sampled. The analysis of the sand samples
extracted from the vibracores and the logging and photographing of
the remaining cores are currently under way.
