The
data CPE collected and compiled through the use of aerial images
and field operations/verification makes up the largest
GIS Database
of biotic communities in the state of North Carolina. The baseline
study was designed in support of the Environmental Impact Statement
developed for the Bogue Inlet Channel Erosion Response Project. This
Database has become a useful tool that combines the visual elements
and features on the map with the ability to query characteristics
about the mapped features. This relationship allows users to locate,
display,
analyze and model the information supplied
in the database. The data
layers displayed in the Bogue Inlet GIS were created and based on
information supplied by Coastal Planning & Engineering Inc.,
CZR, Inc., Geodynamics, LLC., Dr. Bill Cleary of UNC-Wilmington,
NOAA, NC Division of Coastal
Management, and NC Division of Marine Fisheries.
Post-construction ground-truthing and aerial mapping will be collected
approximately 18 months after project completion (estimated September
2006). This data will be incorporated into the GIS database and compared
to pre-construction conditions to identify and quantify changes in
the surrounding habitats as a result of the project. Results of these
investigations will be the basis for determining project effects on
natural communities within the project area.
